COM 125- Introduction to the Internet

Wednesday, January 21, 2009

Well, i am back for my 2nd week posting. In this post i would cover two main points, the first being, addressing the question of "social media is a bad idea-the rise of social media has caused more and more problems like internet addiction, social isolation, and invasion of privacy, especially with the young generation". The second issue that i would cover in this post would be rss feed.

Firstly, i feel there is no "fixed" answer to whether social media is a bad idea. My personal opinion is that, it all depends on how you use it. If you use it for the right reason and appropriate purpose, i feel it is definately useful.

On a positive note, the social media- facebook, friendster, is a place where youngster can socialize and make new friends. Whatmore, if you happen to know a person from say America and you happen to go there for holiday, your America would be able to bring you around and vice versa. This is something that we are not able to do in the past. Also, knowing a person from the internet is safer from knowing a person in real life as whatever that happens, it all happens in the virtual world.

Moving on to the negative side, i feel that internet addicition and social isolation goes hand in hand. If a person is an internet addict, he/she would spend most of his/her time in the internet, maybe searching for friends and so on and so forth, and when he/she do that, it would lead social isolation to that person.

A personal example was that i used to be addicted to playing online game, and when the server is updating, i would visit the forum search for this and that (Internet addiction) and i find myself isolated from the real world. People would be talking about the happenings in the world, the movies of the week, and all i know then was Game and Forum. Such life, in my opinion is harmful as by isolating yourself, you would find yourself lagging behind with what is going on around you. One important factor is you would be losing concern for your family and you would be losing contact with your friends. And as such, i feel, this is one important negative aspect of social media and is one that we would really have to look out for.

Moving on to RSS, personally, i have never subscribed to this service before although i knew it would be a useful tool. I prefer the olden ways of going to the website to check for update(although this may sound funny and lame).

I learnt that there are 3 versions of RSS and we are current at RSS 2.0 which is known as Really Simple Syndication. The main purpose of RSS is to inform the subscriber of that web whenever the web has an update. This is definately advantageous as one need not always visit the website to check for updates(like me). The number of website that allows user for RSS feed is increasing, and big names like Nytimes.com, BBC, and so on allows user to subscribe to the rss. I feel these are very useful as news are always important to us all the time, and any update are certainly worth the attention. I guess i'll stop here, and i would be posting some links if you guys are interested to find out more.

http://www.whatisrss.com/ : This web tells you whats RSS, benefits, RSS feed readers.

http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2002/12/18/dive-into-xml.html : This web explain the difference of version of RSS ranging from version 0.90, 0.91, 0.92 0.93 0.94, 1.0, and 2.0.

By the way readers,

since this week our topic is on social media and the IN thing now is facebook, you guys may put your facebook link in your profile. To get the code to put in your blog, all you need to do is go to your profile in your facebook account, scroll down, and you find "create a profile badge". Follow the instruction and you can put your facebook link in the blog and there you are- widening your social circles.

That all for this week. Till next week. And, an advance Happy Chinese New Year to all.
