| COM 125- Introduction to the Internet |
This is the first week of school, and com 125-introduction to the internet is the very first module of my semester. So, as i have learnt some html stuff during my poly days, and was once a blogger, you can see that i have kind of made my own banner, placed some hyperlinks, placed a chatbox, a music player and a counter. Well, i have actually gotten the layout of the blogskin via http://www.blogskins.com/, so if you guys are interested, you can check it out. After getting it from there, i edited it, to make it fit into the theme of this blog-introduction to the internet. For the banner, i actually downloaded a number of pictures via google, following that, i host it in a website-http://photobucket.com/. I think this is a very good website as it has edit functions. After putting the pictures together, i uploaded it to this website, and click on the edit function for the effects. In terms of photo uploading, this is the first time that i have ever used a photo uploading server, and i think photobucket is rather good as it is easy to use, it is free and also it enable us to edit the pictures that we uploaded. For the chatbox, i placed it for the convenience of those who want to leave a comment or two and one can sign up for a free cbox account at http://www.cbox.ws/ . If you actually browse around, i would say, cbox is an essential part of blogging, and that is why i have it. In terms of music, i believe most people would love to listen while they are reading something, and that is the rationale behind to put a musicbox there. Well, one can upload his/her favourite music to http://www.imeem.com/ and one can placed it in the blog. Finally, for the counter, i have it to keep track the amount of people who come and visit my blog, one can also sign up the counter for free at http://freelogs.com/. One can also choose the different design of counters that are available in that web. Okay, having talked about the nature of my blog, i would also recommend people who are interested in modifying your blog to visit http://www.w3schools.com/, it has information for you on how to fiddle with the script. Also, if one is interested in making a fancy blog with java scripts, one can visit http://www.hypergurl.com/ which has real great codes, but unfortunately, sometimes the code doesnt function in blogs.(i wonder why as it used to function very well) Now, first lesson of com125 talks more of the technical aspect of the internet. I would talk on some networking devices and some cables. Networking devices 1. Router 2. Bridge 3. Switch 4. Hub 5. Repeater Cables 1.Fiber Optic 2. Straight through 3. Cross over (Both 2. 3. are Cat 5 cables) While researching around, i have also noticed that there is cat 6 and cat 7 cables. But as far as most home/small office consumers are concerned, most uses the cat 5 cables. Also, to add on, there is an updated version of cat5 -> cat5e, the cat5e cable allows the usage of far end crosstalk. Although Cat 5e seems to be an updated version of cat5, it has the same specification as that of cat 5 with just the capability of far end crosstalk. Anyway, if you guys are interested to read more of the computer networking devices and cables, feel free to visit the following urls. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_networking_device http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_5_cable The reason to kick off the first post with these cables and networking devices is that, we not only just want to know how to use the internet, before even knowing, it is good to know how do we get connected to the internet. Well, thats it for today, if anyone has anything to add on, feel free to add on in the tagboard. Or should i made any mistake with regards to the information posted here, do tag it on the tagboard. Thanks and have a fun time reading. ~me~ at 2:59 PM | |
